WoW Forever: best Mage race, Alliance and Horde
Gnome for Alliance, Troll for Horde: the viable alternatives, racials and spec exceptions in Forever beta.
The short version
- PvE starting picks: Alliance Gnome; Horde Troll.
- Arcane/Fire/Frost: Gnome and Troll are flexible picks. Eureka changed during beta, so avoid claiming a fixed DPS lead.
Alliance: preferred races
| Race | Why this pick |
|---|---|
| 1. Gnome | Eureka lowers the cost of the next spells and adds damage; Expansive Mind increases resources. |
| 2. Skyborne | Passive haste gives a steady alternative; the elemental bonus needs an elemental target. |
| 3. Human | Spirit helps mana recovery; the sword bonus needs a sword and is not a general caster boost. |
Horde: preferred races

| 1. Troll | Berserking provides a cast-speed burst for all three damage specializations. |
| 2. Orc | Blood Fury grants a spell-power window; useful when aligned with burst. |
| 3. Undead | Will of the Forsaken excels against fear and in PvP, less in a stationary DPS race. |

Only playable combinations are listed. Where a faction has fewer than three eligible races, there is no artificial top three. Gear, encounter, PvP and beta tuning can change the best pick.
