WoW Forever: gear worth keeping for the right terrain or enemy

Terrain bonuses, enemy-specific effects and older gear worth keeping: Blizzard explains how Forever combines situational equipment with gradual power gains.

The short version

  • Some equipment effects depend on the environment or enemy type.
  • New raids still offer measured increases in power.
  • Older items can remain useful for a particular job.

Items that shine in the right place

Blizzard confirms effects tied to woodlands, mountains, deserts and creature types. In his MMORPG.com interview, Josh Greenfield gives extra damage against dragons as an example.

That changes the question when sorting your bags: read a conditional effect before comparing two scores. A piece that helps against one enemy may lose its advantage elsewhere. Its exact conditions will determine whether it deserves a slot in your collection.

Desert movement speed is an example, not a loot guide

The public thread discussing IGN Nordic’s interview reproduces an example of increased movement speed in a desert. It illustrates the idea without identifying an item, a numerical bonus or a boss to farm.

Onslaught Girdle is likewise used as a reference for equipment longevity. That comparison does not guarantee unchanged stats in Forever. These examples cannot support a best-in-slot list.

New raids will still make characters stronger

Greenfield tells MMORPG.com that vertical progression remains, with more gradual increases. Keeping some older rewards desirable is part of the goal.

The shared summary mentions better Tier 2 loot and avoiding Season of Discovery’s excessive power growth. The material reviewed establishes no fixed percentage between tiers. A more restrained curve does not let us calculate the gap between a fresh level 60 and a raid-geared character today.

A concrete example: completing Shadowcraft

The observed Shadowcraft Gloves include +14 Agility and +9 Strength. One equipped piece gives you its own stats. Two Shadowcraft pieces unlock +8 to all resistances; three unlock another bonus of +30 Attack Power. Gloves and shoulders together therefore do not reach that second threshold.

Before keeping an individually weaker piece, check the bonus it would actually activate. Replacing a piece can also drop you below a threshold. The choice then depends on your equipped set, as well as the two individual tooltips.

A loot-table discussion shows the problem: a player is looking for the other ring needed for a set bonus, without confirmed acquisition details. The database creator asks for a screenshot. Separate what the item shows, how many pieces the bonus needs and where the missing piece is obtained.

Shadowcraft: one piece supplies its stats, two add 8 resistances, three add 30 Attack Power.

How many spare items will you want to keep?

Several comments in the public discussion raise bag space as a concern. It is a practical question: a collection of specialised outfits can take up much more room than one main set and a few replacements.

Our reading: the system’s appeal will depend on how often those bonuses matter and how easy sets are to organise. Saving an item for a specific trip can be enjoyable; hoarding every drop just in case is a different prospect. Testing should help establish which experience players actually get.

This explainer covers BlizzCon announcements and the interviews that followed. It does not present those details as a patch released today.
