WoW Forever Legacy Points: unlocks, spending and best uses

Unlock your first Legacy Point, understand the 16-point spending cap, and pick perks for the activities you actually play.

The short version

  • Earn one Legacy Point to open the system: level 25, a non-gathering primary profession at 150, or full map exploration.
  • Challenges grant account-wide points; each character can spend up to 16 at launch.
  • One character can earn enough points to reach that cap.

How do you unlock the Legacy System?

Earn your first Legacy Point. Blizzard lists three routes: reach level 25 on a class, raise a non-gathering primary profession to 150, or explore the entire world map. Then open the shield icon in the menu or press the default Y hotkey.

Unlock
One point is enough; level 25 will be the usual route.
Shortcut
Y by default, or the shield in the menu.

How earning and spending points works

Blizzard lists 65 challenges across classes, professions, PvP, adventure, dungeons and raids. Each grants one Battle.net account-wide point available to non-Hardcore characters. Your characters share earned points, but each chooses its own perks.

At launch, each character can spend at most 16 points. Blizzard counts up to 29 points earnable on a single character, so leveling alts is not required to fill your perk trees. Earned points also advance account rewards.

Challenges
65 across six categories; one point each.
Spending cap
16 points per character at launch.
Without alts
Up to 29 points earnable on one character, according to Blizzard.

Which perks should you consider first?

The three trees cover Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness. If you fish, Luremaster can bring in extra fish; Working Overtime helps you gain profession skill points. For leveling, Well Rested raises the rested XP cap and accumulation rate. Field Guide cuts the one-hour cooldown on placing camping features.

Those perks support different activities. Choose around what you actually do; Blizzard does not prescribe a universal perk order in this overview.

Alts, rewards and Hardcore

Earned Legacy Points also unlock account cosmetics, including a spectral bear cub, tabard and mount. Make an alt if another class interests you; it is not required to reach the 16-point perk cap.

Hardcore is not available at launch. Blizzard says it will have separate Legacy rules when introduced: challenges earned outside Hardcore will not transfer into Hardcore.
