Marksmanship at level 20: a short rotation, why keeping a pet is useful, the Lone Wolf fix and which gear and dungeon paths to check.
A pet remains a practical damage and safety tool while questing. Wowhead’s level-20 guide says its contribution outweighs the Lone Wolf bonus at this bracket; do not treat a no-pet build as automatically stronger because it sounds like Marksmanship. Feed the pet, train abilities, and carry ammunition before leaving town.
Put Hunter’s Mark on a target if the pull will last long enough. Apply Serpent Sting, then use Arcane Shot and Aimed Shot on single targets; use Multi-Shot when fighting several. Keep enough distance to shoot and let your pet hold a manageable target. This is a level-20 beta priority, not an endgame rotation.
Blizzard fixed a bug that left hunters at −4% damage after unlearning Lone Wolf while a pet was active. This correction removes a penalty caused by changing talents; it does not prove Lone Wolf is now the best choice at level 20. Older comparisons need a retest on the current build.
Prioritize a usable ranged weapon, ammunition and gear that fits your level and faction. Wowhead lists Venomstrike from Wailing Caverns among the level-20 dungeon options, but check the current item and access in game before farming. Our separate pet guide and dungeon directory help with the next choice.
