Assassination Rogue in the level-20 Forever beta: which buttons to use, why the full kit is missing and when to choose a dagger over Combat.
Assassination is playable, but the beta level cap cuts off several abilities that define its later toolkit: Mutilate, Venom and Seal Fate. Wowhead’s level-20 guide describes a Backstab-focused dagger route; that is a choice for players who like positioning, not evidence that Assassination beats Combat in every dungeon.
With a dagger and access to the target’s back, build with Backstab and maintain Slice and Dice. In a physical-damage group, Expose Armor can help on a target that lives long enough. If you cannot stay behind the target, Sinister Strike remains a practical fallback. Keep the main-hand weapon current: its damage affects these early attacks more directly than a distant endgame ranking.
Blizzard fixed Sap so it correctly flags a Rogue for PvP when used on a PvP-flagged target. The official notes do not declare an Assassination damage winner or change this level-20 dagger priority. Older claims about how Sap affects PvP should be rechecked.
Wowhead lists dungeon and quest rewards for level 20, but those suggestions are beta snapshots. Check the weapon’s actual speed, damage, class requirement and current drop in game before planning a farm. The distinction that matters first is dagger Backstab versus a slower one-handed weapon for Sinister Strike; this page does not turn every item on an external list into a confirmed Forever BiS.
