WoW Forever or Classic Era: which should a casual player choose?

Choose between Classic Era and WoW Forever by the game you want to play, your friends and your time. Check launch access and where to start.

The short version

  • Choose Classic Era for the original Classic content you can play now; choose Forever for a reimagined Azeroth with new systems from November 4.
  • A WoW subscription or game time covers Forever at launch; an upgrade pack is optional for the base game.
  • If friends matter, agree on the Forever ruleset and faction before creating characters.

The short answer for limited play time

Stay with Classic Era if your existing character, guild or the original Classic experience is what you enjoy. Try Forever if the new zones, revised classes, Legacy progression and camps are the reason you want to start again. Neither choice is objectively better for a casual player; the useful question is where your next few sessions will feel worth spending.

What changes in Forever?

Forever is a separate new game experience set in a reimagined original Azeroth. Blizzard describes new and expanded zones, revised class specializations, a Legacy progression system and profession-based camps. Instead of choosing a traditional realm first, you choose a ruleset such as Normal, PvP or Roleplaying. Players in different rulesets cannot group for dungeons or raids; Horde and Alliance cannot group together.

Do you need to buy another game?

At launch, Blizzard includes Forever with an active WoW subscription or game time. You do not need an upgrade pack for the base game. Some extras, including Skyborne and its starting experience, do require a paid pack. The beta has different access rules: an invitation or an eligible pack is needed before launch.

New player: choose your group, then your class

If you are starting with friends, decide on the same faction and ruleset before you make characters. If you are torn between an Orc Warrior and an Orc Warlock, start from the job you want: Warrior is a melee fighter who can tank, while Warlock fights at range with a demon companion. These are playstyle descriptions, not a claim that one levels faster in the current beta. Try the class you actually want to keep playing.
