Protection Paladin at level 20: tanking after the Forever beta patch

Level-20 Protection Paladin: when its tank tools arrive, a practical pull priority and which older aura and Consecration advice the patch changed.

When does Protection become a practical tank?

At level 20 you have Consecration, which makes groups of enemies easier to control. Righteous Fury and Retribution Aura become available earlier, around level 16. Before that, this spec has fewer tools for steady multi-target threat. These are beta-level observations, not an endgame tank ranking.

A pull priority you can use

Apply Righteous Fury and an aura before the pull. Keep Seal of Fury active, use Judgement and Holy Strike on the target you need to hold, and place Consecration where multiple enemies will stay. Use line of sight to bring ranged enemies together. This is a priority list, not a rigid rotation: move or change targets when your group’s threat requires it.

Ignore two outdated beta workarounds

Blizzard’s September 24 notes say Retribution Aura now updates dynamically from spell power, so old advice to reapply it whenever gear changes is obsolete. The same patch fixed multiple Consecration issues involving damage and vertical positioning. If you read a guide recommending aura-snapshot swaps or moving mobs to force Consecration damage, check its build date before following it.

What remains uncertain

A beta interaction involving Seal of Fury and Improved Seal of Fury is described as a bug in the specialist guide; do not build a launch gearing plan around that extra mana. The official notes also contain a contradictory Righteous Fury line (“increased to 60%” while citing 90% before), so this page does not pretend to settle the exact threat coefficient. Recheck the live tooltip after the next build.
